If you work in an office where there is a collective milk provision you may have never come across this problem – but if not you may have at one point experienced sneaky co-workers helping themselves to yours.

There's no debating it can be frustrating, but one office worker has taken their fury to a whole other level by padlocking a big bottle of milk at work so that no one else can have any.

The image, taken inside the fridge at an office, shows the milk locked up with a specially-designed device.

In the picture there are a couple of milk bottles with normal screw tops, but on the middle one, a worker has put a specially adapted padlock that is secured with a U-shaped bar going through the handle – meaning it can only be opened with a key.

This has sparked a massive debate online, with thousands of people people split down the middle on whether his extreme measures are genius – or ludicrous.

Sharing a picture on popular forum Reddit, a co-worker asked: "Peak pettiness or justifiable security in the office kitchen?"

Some people saw both sides of the story, with one person saying: "It's kind of both at once. If people didn't take what's not theirs there would be no need. I wouldn't go that far with milk but people lost food at the last place I was at. 12 hour shift with no food ain't a joke."

Those who disagreed with the post wrote: "I find kitchen politics to be so strange . It's so straight forward and rules should be in place but we like to mock each other for expecting basic respect, like imagine having to go to these lengths?"

Another said: "Acceptable for a smaller bottle. Taking all the fridge space with a big four pinter and locking it, entitled."

A third added: "Peak pettiness," while a fourth simply said: "Bruh it's just milk."

"Is this really necessary?" asked another.

However, plenty of others were completely on the side of the worker, with one commenting: "As someone who used to buy a two pints of milk every week, only for it to be completely empty by Wednesday morning, I totally understand the rationale. I vote not petty."

Another agreed, adding: "Justifiable, because some tw*t has forced a person to become petty."

A third commented: "Shame that it is necessary. Thieving colleagues are not a pleasant thing. But as it is necessary, absolutely the right thing to do."

What do you think, petty or not petty? Let us know in the comment section below.
