As Keir Starmer sat down with volunteers who work with struggling families in his London constituency, one woman had a question for him: “How are you going to save us?”

After three years of touring the country in his role as Labour leader, he knows in detail the problems many households are facing.

The party has revealed some of its ideas on how it would tackle them, including a freeze on council tax bills and a windfall tax on oil and gas firms to help people with their energy bills – something the Government eventually nicked.

With as long as 18 months still to go until a general election, Mr Starmer understandably has been reluctant to set out a comprehensive plan of how he wants to change the country - and how he would help those families seeking the advice of community groups as they are finding it difficult to make ends meet.

In the next few weeks, the Labour leader will detail more of his vision with big speeches planned on both health and education.

But after the party’s resounding success in the local elections earlier this month put him on course to snatch the keys to No10, he should expect a lot more questions in the coming months on how exactly he will make life better for the millions struggling up and down this country.
