Trent Alexander-Arnold believes his “tough season” will inspire him to become even better as Liverpool look to put a trophy less campaign behind them.
Although Jurgen Klopp’s side haven’t given up hope of claiming a Champions League place there will be no silverware unlike last season when they lifted the FA Cup and Carabao Cup.
And for Alexander-Arnold there have at times been more brickbats than bouquets following some indifferent performances.
He admitted: “I think it hasn’t gone as well for me as it has done in previous seasons and last season specifically but I know there have been games when I have performed really well. It has been a season I can learn from to improve.”
That, he says, also goes for the whole team where results have gone from the sublime (a 7-0 hammering of Manchester United ) to the ridiculous (losing 3-0 at Wolves ).
Klopp's dream Liverpool line up as last-gasp January transfers rejected
“I probably have the same approach personally as I do for the team’s performances this season,” he added. “I look at it the same way – you don’t go from being a world class team or a world class player last season to then losing that ability and talent and not having that within you.
Trent Alexander-Arnold has offered a philosophical view on his own, and Liverpool's struggles this season (@BBCBreakfast/Twitter)“So I know as a team, and personally, what I can achieve and the potential I’ve got. A bad season or a bad run of results or bad performances won’t knock that belief I’ve got within.
“Potentially it is hopefully a season of learning and understanding and bonding because the tough times are when you really come together, when you learn about each other and when you really fight for each other on and off the pitch.
“It draws you closer as a team. Once you get back to winning ways you start to believe. You start to feed it then it flows.”
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp is imploring his side to finish strong this seasonKlopp is also adamant that a strong end to this campaign will offer a massive hint that next season could see a sharp improvement.
“Yeah, it must [set the tone for next season]. It’s a must. Look, when you just play a bad season – what we did until a few weeks ago – with some highlights, which makes it a bit more difficult to understand really, it makes you even more angry when you think about it, ‘We can play like this but most of the time we played like that?’ So that’s really not cool.
“This period is super-important for us because it gives us a massive hint how it could look, and we all know we are in [the] early stages, we have to improve, we have to train a lot, work a lot and to make things more natural and more clear for the boys what we want exactly.”
