As the weather gets warmer, it starts to become significantly easier to get your washing dry - especially if you've got a washing line outside.

But that doesn't make actually washing your clothes any cheaper, only the drying part. So if you're struggling with your household bills, an expert has shared some tips that will help you save money whilst making your clothes clean again.

Washing machines are one of the most costly appliances in the home as they are used very frequently, but there are some easy switches that you can make in order to save yourself some cash.

Many people avoid selecting a cooler wash cycle on their washing machine out of fear their clothes won't be cleaned properly, but thanks to detergent pods and newer washing machine technologies, this isn't the case.

Rebecca Bebbington at NetVoucherCodes.co.uk told the Express that washing at a high temperature can "cost a fortune", so washing at 30C is a better option as it "still does the job."

According to Ariel, Britons can save, on average, 57% if they choose to wash their clothing at 30C instead of 40C.

Rebecca recommends checking the settings on your machine, saying if people want to save cash they should wash for 30 minutes, also saying "eco mode setting to use less water and electricity" works well for things like bedding.

Cleaning out your filter is also important as it gets rid of "excess dirt and dust."

Rebecca said: "If this builds up in the filter, it can make the machine heat up and use more energy. Soapy water and a sponge can be used to clean the machine, but washing up liquid also works equally well and has a shiny finish.

"For any tight corners, use an old toothbrush to get rid of excess dirt."

And if you wait for a full washing machine load, you'll also save money, despite the fact it's tempting to keep your washing basket empty.

If you do need to wash something quickly, hand wash the clothing item rather than putting it in the washing machine.

Rebecca said only washing full loads is one of the "easiest ways to save you cash."
