The latest NFL schedule update has created what will be a 20-year first for reigning Super Bowl champions the Kansas City Chiefs.

The Chiefs will be looking to defend their title when the Super Bowl goes to Las Vegas next February. Between now and then, though, the AFC West team will have to go through the regular season just like the other 31 NFL franchises.

Wednesday saw the announcement of the games which have been selected for the NFL International series in England and Germany. There were rumours that the Chiefs’ game against the Detroit Lions was set to be selected as one of the overseas matches.

However, it’s been confirmed that the Chiefs will instead play the Miami Dolphins in Frankfurt in November. This means that the Lions will go to Arrowhead Stadium to face the Chiefs in their regular season game.

As a result of this, the Lions will be going to the Arrowhead for the first time in 20 years. The NFC North team has not faced an away game against the Chiefs in Kansas City since 2003, which ended in a Chiefs 45-17 victory.

Since then, the Chiefs and the Lions have played each other four times, and none of them have been at the Arrowhead. The 2007 and 2011 games were both in Detroit, while the 2015 game took place in London.

The most recent contest between the Chiefs and the Lions was in 2019. The Week Four game also resulted in a victory for the Chiefs, as they won 34-30 in Detroit.

More games were announced as part of the International Series, with two taking place in Germany and three in London. The other match in Frankfurt will see the Indianapolis Colts face the New England Patriots.

Two matches will take place at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, including the Jacksonville Jaguars vs Buffalo Bills and Baltimore Ravens vs Tennessee Titans. The one game at Wembley Stadium will see a second game for Jacksonville for the first time ever in London game history, as they take on the Atlanta Falcons.
