A homeowner has been left with serious damage to his home after lightning blasted his entire chimney off during a thunderstorm.

Derek Neilson was in the sitting room of his Dublin home when the lightning struck but thankfully was not injured during the storms on Monday.

A local told Dublin Live that the community is rallying together to help the Mr Neilson tonight, with some neighbours up on ladders trying to make the roof tenable against the weather.

A Status Yellow weather warning was in place in Dublin and ten other counties earlier today as thunderstorms wrecked havoc across the country.

Thunderstorms are on the way to the rest of the UK over the following days, with the Met Office issuing a yellow weather warning covering London, the South East, Devon and Cornwall and as far north as Lincoln.

A spokesperson for the Met Office said: "There is a good chance driving conditions will be affected by spray, standing water and/or hail, leading to longer journey times by car and bus.

"Some flooding of a few homes and businesses possible, leading to some damage to buildings or structures.

"Probably some damage to a few buildings and structures from lightning strikes.

"Delays to train services are possible.

"Some short term loss of power and other services is possible."
