An attack on a paramedic in Manchester by a crowd of more than 150 people has sparked action by police.

The unnamed emergency worker was on his bike when he was pushed off by a member of the huge crowd of people who were running amok in the city on Sunday.

Following the unprovoked attack, the gang went on to cause disruption by making their way over tram tracks before entering the Arndale Centre.

Inside some sprayed the walls and windows.

A man was detained on suspicion of causing damage and taken into custody and police put in place a dispersal order lasting until midnight Monday.

The powers allow police to exclude a person or people from an area for up to 48 hours through a written notice.

Superintendent Nicola Williams said the attacks on emergency personnel continued as her officers had bottles thrown at them by members of the gang.

She added: “Today, my officers have had bottles thrown at them and this is totally unacceptable.

“On occasion, we have problems with people coming into the city centre and engaging in anti-social behaviour and the police are taking decisive action to stop this.

"Members of the public who live, visit or come into the city to work should not have to witness this behaviour or be put at risk.

"The Dispersal Order means we will serve anyone who is taking part in this disturbing behaviour, notice to leave our city and they won't be allowed to return for at least 48 hours."

She added the paramedic was uninjured in the incident with the large mob of people.

Some people applauded police for taking action, although some suggested the mob should have been stopped before violence erupted.

One person said: “Great work Greater Manchester Police, seems to be getting common recently for whatever reason.

“Why can't these idiots be the scared ones for a change, rather than the innocent people going about their daily lives?

“Why are they doing it in the first place?”

Another added: “Need to make sure all are identified on CCTV and taken to court and pay financially and if needs be time in jail and then named and shamed .

“I hope the paramedic is okay.”

But another argued: “Don’t they just move off to somewhere else to cause issues?

“I don’t get how this is even a solution. Move from one place causing trouble to another place and cause an annoyance there?”
