A chippy hailed as being the seaside town's cheapest has claimed its low prices make it the least expensive in the whole of the UK.

With the average cost of a portion of fish and chips in the UK currently standing at £11.05 many will be looking around for more reasonably priced alternatives.

In Blackpool, where fish and chips is considered a staple meal, Tower Fisheries not only claims to be the cheapest in the town but also the UK.

In a post shared on social media bosses at the Topping Street chippy claim to be the cheapest in the UK. A portion of fish, chips and peas costs just £5.25.

In November LancsLive visited Tower Fisheries to test out Blackpool's cheapest chippy tea. Our reporter said: "I got a huge piece of fish and plenty of chips, which on first inspection seemed a bit soggy, but they turned out to be perfect."

Commenting on the chippy's claim to be the cheapest in Blackpool our reporter added: "The whole meal tasted exactly the same as if I'd paid £10 for it, which isn't uncommon in Blackpool chippies in the current climate.

"The food was hot, cooked to perfection and you could practically taste the value for money."

In March, a list of the best fish and chip shops across the country was compiled.

But with 11,00 chippies across the UK to choose from, there's some pretty stiff competition as to which are the best.

Fry Magazine has unveiled its list of the best 50 and top 10 winners for 2023 after making secret visits to hundreds of fisheries across the country, rating them on cleanliness, service, prices and, of course, taste.

With the cost of living crisis pushing up energy, food and labour costs, it has not been a smooth sail for fish and chip restaurants across the country, and business owners have had to work harder than ever to stay afloat.

Reece Head, who runs the annual contest, said that profits for chippies might not be "like they have in years gone by", but "the passion certainly is".

"The businesses that make up our 50 Best Fish & Chip Takeaways and 10 Best Fish & Chip Restaurants represent the best in the industry," Reece said.

"They are pushing forwards while not losing sight of what makes the chippy so engrained in British culture - high quality, value for money food with great customer service and inviting surroundings."
