Jurgen Klopp has been charged by the FA after claiming Paul Tierney has an issue with him and his Liverpool side.

The referee was the man in the middle for Liverpool's late win over Tottenham on Sunday, but the German disagreed with some of his decisions, which eventually saw him awarded a yellow card. Klopp was particularly animated after a foul went against Mohamed Salah, shortly before Tottenham's equaliser.

Liverpool went on to pick up the three points but Klopp raised his history with Tierney and claimed he spoke to him in an improper way, something the PGMOL have since rejected after analysing the match audio, stating "we can confirm he acted in a professional manner throughout".

In a statement, the FA said: "Liverpool FC’s Jürgen Klopp has been charged following their Premier League fixture against Tottenham Hotspur FC on Sunday 30 April.

"It is alleged that the manager’s comments regarding the match official during post-match media interviews constitutes improper conduct in that they imply bias, and/or question the integrity of the referee, and/or are personal/offensive, and/or bring the game into disrepute. Jürgen Klopp has until Friday 5 May to provide a response."

Klopp's post-match press conference is what has landed him in hot water with the authorities.

Speaking after the match he told Sky Sports: "We have our history with Tierney, I really don't know what he has against us. He has said there [are] no problems but that cannot be true. How he looks at me, I don't understand it. In England nobody has to clarify these situations, it's really tricky and hard to understand. What he said to me when he gave me the yellow card is not OK."

Klopp was handed a caution after he ran to celebrate Diogo Jota's winner in the face of the fourth official, shortly after he'd taken issue with a decision that went against the Reds. His sudden burst of speed saw the Liverpool boss then grab his hamstring, which he pulled.

The Liverpool boss lamented Tierney in the fixture between his side and Tottenham back in 2021, insisting Harry Kane should've been sent-off - raising issue with the referee on that occasion too - which was not their first encounter.

He said after that game: "I really have no idea what his [Tierney] problem is with me. Honestly, I have no idea. You just need an objective ref who sees the situations and trust them. He told me that he thinks he [Jota] stops on purpose. That's incredible. He had the best spot on the pitch, he was eight yards away and doesn't give it. We have to ask him, what's his problem."
