Princess Charlotte is today celebrating her eighth birthday and King Charles is among members of the Royal Family who have sent her a special message to mark the occasion.

The official Instagram account of the Royal Family, which shares news and updates on the work of the King and Queen Consort, shared a newly-released photo of Charlotte adding a sticker that says: "Happy birthday!"

The picture was first shared late last night by the social media accounts of Prince William and Catherine, who also wanted to wish their daughter a very happy birthday.

The photo was taken by the Princess of Wales, who has a passion for photography and has previously published portrait images of her children to celebrate major milestones from birthdays to school starts.

In the photograph, taken by Kate in Windsor at the weekend, Charlotte can be seen relaxing in a white wicker chair.

The new pic was released a day after royal fans spotted never-before-seen images of doting grandfather King Charles with his two oldest grandchildren in a special BBC documentary.

The previously unseen photos that show Prince George and Princess Charlotte featured in the film Charles R: The Making of a Monarch, which aired on Monday.

The documentary charted the King's early years right up until his accession last year using a host archive footage and images.

The first showed Charles, in around 2016, playing with his granddaughter Charlotte, who is still just a baby.

Meanwhile, another shot shows him with future King George at a tea party thought to be in the same year, with Charles pointing out something of interest as the youngster clutches a glass of juice.

Last month, a new book claimed that Charlotte is set to be granted one of the "grandest" royal titles after it was reserved for her by King Charles.

She is currently formally known as Princess Charlotte of Wales - a nod to her parents being the Prince and Princess of Wales.

But it is likely that as the youngster grows up and enters adulthood, her royal title will change.

And with George's future already mapped out as King, royal author Robert Jobson writes in his new book Our King Charles III: the Man and the Monarch that Charlotte is in line to become the future Duchess of Edinburgh.

He explains: "Sensitive to the fact that nine-year-old Prince George's future is already mapped out, Charles has been careful to reserve one of the grandest titles for Princess Charlotte – currently called Lottie by her mother and Mignonette (French for cute little thing) by her father.

"Although the King has made his brother Edward the new Duke of Edinburgh, the title is only for life. After Edward dies, Charles has made it clear Charlotte (now aged seven) should become Duchess of Edinburgh."

In March, the King granted the title of Duke of Edinburgh to his youngest brother Prince Edward, making his wife Sophie the Duchess of Edinburgh.

The announcement from Buckingham Palace came on Edward's 59th birthday last with his new title, previously held by his father the late Prince Philip, set to be with him for his lifetime.
