Gary Neville has accused Jurgen Klopp of "shielding" Liverpool owners Fenway Sports Group (FSG) after comparing them to the Glazers.

In a segment from The Overlap, Neville and Jamie Carragher were debating FSG's ownership of Liverpool. In the segment, Neville claims there are similarities between FSG and the Glazers, stating: "I think Jurgen Klopp is shielding the owners there because I don't think they are too different from the Glazers.

"I've said that for a few years. [Jurgen] Klopp is shielding FSG in the same way the Glazers have been shielded by Sir Alex [Ferguson]. I think I'm right on that."

Carragher, however, disagreed with Neville's assessment and insisted the Glazers are the "total opposite of FSG" after responding to a clip of their exchange on Twitter. "Small segment of the full debate, which started with my friend saying FSG & the Glazers were the same, which is absolute s***e!" Carragher wrote.

"Glazers take [money] out of the club, let Old Trafford rot, did nothing with the training ground, have no structure at the club. Total opposite of FSG."

Neville then repeated his claim that Klopp has been "shielding" Liverpool's owners from criticism after a Reds fan pointed out the fact that the club opened a new training facility in 2020 and are in the process of redeveloping and expanding Anfield.

"They didn't have a choice," Neville insisted. "They had to increase revenue and protect/raise their exit value. Maybe worth reading the below. Klopp is shielding them.

"They've done very well with very little output. This is why I said it's similar to the Glazer model. Also worth checking their fund raising in the US against the club."

He also attached a snippet of an article highlighting the fact that FSG had invested just £136m into the club since purchasing it in 2010.
