Maggots have been found in a school canteen and "had fallen from the ceiling" onto food forcing a headteacher to issue an apology to parents.
Pupils at the Winston Churchill School in Woking, Surrey were warned on Tuesday that the school’s canteen would be closed and they would need to bring food from home.
According to the letter, headteacher Zoë Johnson-Walker said she was extremely sorry for any distress caused.
The letter reportedly said: "During lunchtime today a few maggots have been found in the canteen and one was found on a ready-prepared meal, which we believe had fallen from the ceiling.”
"Every step is being taken to ensure that this is a one-off”.

“I am extremely sorry for any distress this may cause.
“However, please be assured that every step is being taken, with the appropriate advice, to ensure that food is being prepared in clean, safe conditions.

A deep clean is said to have then taken place and included checks of the ceiling void and the extraction system.
Drains at the school have also been treated with chemicals and canteen staff will undertake an enhanced cleaning routine.

Mrs Johnson-Walker added that in order to reassure parents and pupils the decision was taken to suspend food service the next day in order for additional checks to be carried out and chemicals to have no impact on food preparation, reports Surrey Live.
Students who receive free school meals were provided with a sandwich and drink prepared and packed off-site.
A spokesperson for Woking Borough Council said: "Winston Churchill School alerted us to the issue and sought our Environmental Health advice.
"We’re satisfied that the school are taking prompt action to deal with this matter appropriately."
