Rob McElhenney plots Bale to Wrexham transfer after message from Wales legend

Wrexham co-owner Rob McElhenney has jokingly hinted at trying to convince Wales legend Gareth Bale to come out of retirement after the ex-Real Madrid star congratulated the club on their promotion to League Two.

Wrexham sealed the National League title on Saturday with a 3-1 win over Boreham Wood - confirming the end of Notts County’s challenge, who will now have to win promotion to League Two via the Play-Offs.

Many top stars have congratulated Wrexham and Hollywood co-owners McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds on the club’s success under their ownership, and Tottenham, Real Madrid and Wales legend Bale is the latest.

Bale, 33, who retired following Wales’ group stage exit at last year’s World Cup in Qatar, sent McElhenney a personal message which the actor posted to Twitter.

“Hi Rob, just want to congratulate you on your promotion and everything you’re doing at Wrexham,” the former LAFC star said. Bale’s message was well received by McElhenney. The Always Sunny actor invited the retired football star to play a round of golf with him, where he has jokingly suggested he will try and convince him to join the Wrexham revolution.

“Hey @GarethBale11 let’s play golf, where I totally won’t spend 4 hours trying to convince you to un-retire for one last magical season,” McElhenney said on Twitter.

Should Wrexham pull off a magical move for Wales’ best-ever player, Bale would be the second high-profile player in the last year to "un-retire" to play for the club. Former England, Watford, West Brom and Manchester United keeper, Ben Foster, came out of retirement to help his former club, Wrexham, win promotion.

Such a move could also see Bale link-up with one of his former Wales teammates, Hal Robson-Kanu, who has offered to come out of retirement to play for Wrexham with his wages going to charity.

Whether the five-time Champions League winner would give up retired life, and days on the golf course, for one last dance with a team on the up and playing in his home country is unknown.
