Two women have been seriously injured after a 'frenzied' dog attack in Liverpool left the animals 'red with blood'.

Dad Kevin Cannon witnessed the horror attack in the early hours of Thursday morning in Walton, claiming it began with an altercation between two dogs: "I saw the two women in the street and I think there had been a fight. One of the women was covered in blood and the other woman was screaming 'help her'.

"The dogs were savaging the woman. I have never witnessed anything like it.

"One of them had her leggings in its mouth and the other had ripped off her top.

"There was blood everywhere and she had injuries to her face and neck. She was in a really bad way. The dogs were in a frenzy. They were white Staffies but were red with blood."

The women were rushed to hospital with serious injuries where they remain in a stable condition. A 40-year-old woman has been arrested on suspicion of owning a dog dangerously out of control causing injury to others.

She has been taken to a police station in Merseyside where she remains in custody. Both dogs have been detained by police.

Locals also reported a police helicopter hovering above the area, with pictures from the scene showing multiple police cars, including Matrix vans, lining Walton Lane and police tape was put up on nearby Ismay Street a short time later.

A pair of slippers have also been discarded inside the cordon. Forensic officers have also been pictured arriving since 9.45am.

The Liverpool Echo reports parents have been walking past the scene in shock and worried for their children's safety, with around 15 police cars and four ambulances at the scene in the early hours.

Locals also report spotting armed officers storming the scene. One woman said: "There's always something," as she revealed she heard bangs at around 3am and loud noises, adding her child was disturbed by the commotion.

Mr Cannon, who called the emergency services, said he honked his car to try and scare the dogs away from the woman. He added one of the dogs came running over to him and he got back into his car.

The dad told the ECHO: "When I saw it running over I was shaking. My instant reaction was to help but I saw the dogs were in a frenzy. I'm a single parent - if I got injured and had to go to hospital my daughter would be on her own."

Mr Cannon said "after the first car came they kept coming". He added: "I think there were around 12 police vehicles including Matrix vans and police dog units.

"When the police came they rammed one of the dogs with their car and the other dog ran away in the direction of City Road. The police helicopter was up looking for the other dog.

"It's one of those things you read about or see on TV. To see it was surreal. It's sickening to have seen it. It was horrendous."

Detective Inspector Neil Dillon said: “This incident has left two women with serious injuries and will have been an extremely distressing incident for all who witnessed it and our officers who were involved.

"I would like to commend our officers whose quick response and actions stopped this horrific attack from causing any more significant injuries to those involved.

“Our enquiries into the full circumstances of the incident are ongoing, and we have seized the dogs for the safety of the community.

“We have a dedicated team who review all cases concerning dangerous dogs, and are keen to speak to any witnesses who may have seen the incident or these dogs on previous occasions.

"I want to emphasize that dog owners need to be mindful of their dogs' behaviours at all times , particularly when they are in the care of others. If owners or anyone who is looking after any dogs that are liable to be aggressive please make sure they are in a protected space and on a lead or muzzled if out in public.”
