A mum broke down in tears today as she came face to face with the man accused of murdering her seven-year-old daughter 31 years ago.

Nikki Allan was found dead in a derelict building near her home in Sunderland in October 1992. She had been stabbed multiple times after going missing when she left her grandfather's home.

David Thomas Boyd, 55, of Chesterton Court, Norton, Stockton-on-Tees appeared at Newcastle Crown Court on the first day of his trial accused of her murder.

Nikki's mum Sharon Henderson, 56, was in the public gallery as potential jury members were told of the circumstances of Nikki's death. She left the court in tears when her daughter's name was read out.

Judge Mrs Justice Lambert told potential jurors that it was a 'seriously important' case. She added: "Jury service lies at the heart of the criminal justice system.

"This may well be the most important public duty you will ever be asked to do in your life. I cannot put it more starkly than that.

"David Boyd, also known as David Smith and David Bell, is accused of killing Nikki Allan. You will have to listen to the evidence in this case. You must put all sorts of normal responses to one side and approach the case dispassionately.

"If you think that you will not be able to keep your emotions in check.... then please tell me."

Gill Batts, prosecuting, asked the jurors if they knew anyone connected to the trial, including Boyd. She said: "In 1993, in Leeds Crown Court, George Heron was prosecuted for the murder of Nikki Allan.

"Did you know him or anyone he was related to?" Potential jurors were given a questionnaire to answer, and told they could only turn down jury service for valid reasons such as a pre-booked holiday or hospital appointment.

They are due to be sworn in tomorrow to hear the prosecution open the case.
