Dishwashers are a real life-saver for busy families or anyone who hates scrubbing plates. They make your dishes gleam and sparkle with minimal effort, and you can rely on the trusty gadget to get the job done properly.

But in order for it to work properly, it needs to be loaded correctly and the dishwasher tablets need to be put in the right place. With the rise of social media users telling us we're doing things wrong, people have been trying an alternative way of putting their dishwasher tablets in - ignoring the tablet compartment.

However, an expert has warned against just chucking the dishwasher tablet into the back of the machine, stating it's important you put it in its rightful place.

TikTok's 'CEO of Randomness' Anna Lanier claimed that her 'repair man' said to just throw the dishwasher tablet in the back of the machine, rather than putting it in the compartment.

But people were quick to share that's not the case, with one person commenting: "Repair guy here. Don't throw it in the back! Machine does a pre-rinse and it will all wash away before the main cycle."

Now, an expert has warned why it's important you put the dishwasher tablet in the correct place.

Nicki Rodriguez, a cleaning guru who uses the username @essexhousedolly across all social media, told The Mirror: "There is a lot of speculation surrounding dishwasher tablets - are they better to be just chucked in on the floor of your machine or put in the compartment?

"The answer to this is simple...YES they do need to be put in the compartment which leads me to explain why our machines are made with this little storage box for your tablet."

She continued: "When our dishwashers start their cycle of washing our dirty dishes and kitchen items, it is similar to our digestive system - everything has a stage it has to work at.

"When your machine is first switched on, water is sprayed on items to complete the first phase. If you leave your tablet on the floor, the tablet then dissolves too quickly, therefore, releasing the detergent inside in the first phase which is called the pre-wash of your cycle.

"The second phase of your main wash in which the storage box would flip open to release the tablet will then not happen, resulting in your dirty dishes etc not getting cleaned.

"Always ensure you use your storage compartment and also to maintain your dishwasher's performance, always have salt and rinse aid levels full as well as giving your actual appliance a regular clean too."

Will you be using your dishwasher's compartment now? Let us know in the comments.
