A high-pressure weather front is expected to bring sunny spells and consistently dry weather this weekend and into next week, following an unsettled period of wind and rain.

Temperatures will linger above 10 degrees for most of the UK over the weekend but may push into the teens in southern areas as the week progresses, ushering in a distinctly spring-like feel.

The outlook is a far cry from the wet and windy conditions of the past few weeks, although plenty of cloud is still predicted for much of the country.

"It certainly doesn't look like you'll need your umbrella this weekend," says BBC meteorologist Tomasz Schafernaker. "But then again, it's not going to be all that sunny.."

Despite a "shield of cloud" covering a large part of the country, Schafernaker noted that a "mild air mass will be in place across the UK over the course of the weekend and into the week ahead", leading to notably milder temperatures.

This means that no frost is to be expected over the weekend.

Some patches of low pressure are lingering outside the UK as Monday approaches, but Schafernaker assures that "they will be kept at bay....and the weather isn't expected to change", and temperatures remaining at around 10 to 12 degrees Celsius.

By Wednesday and night into Thursday, rain can be expected as a long vertical weather front - covering the entirety of the UK - drifts across from west to east.

All in all, it will be a pleasant week with significantly less rain and noticeably warmer temperatures.

The Met Office's weather headline for the next week is simple: "Mainly dry, but often rather cloudy."

The BBC Five-Day Forecast

Saturday:

Saturday is expected to be a settled day, with plenty of cloud around. There will be some brighter spells in spots, these more frequent in the afternoon. A few spots of light rain in the far north.

Sunday:

Northern and western areas will become brighter with a mix of sunny spells and areas of low cloud, but elsewhere it will remain cloudy. The odd spot of drizzle likely in the far north-west.

Outlook for Monday to Wednesday:

Monday will be a dry day with variable cloud and local mist and fog in the morning, but it should turn sunny for most by the afternoon, with just a few clouds lingering in the west.

Tuesday will be dry and bright in England and Wales, but cloudier elsewhere with a few spots of rain. Wednesday may see a band of rain move in from the west, but this will mainly affect the west.
