Upstaging the bride on her big day is pretty much the cardinal sin when going to a wedding - either by turning up in a white dress, stealing the show with guests or making a scene with a family argument.

One stepmum has faced a huge backlash online for doing just that as she plans to wear an extravagant dress which is likely to upstage her daughter's wedding - and the bride is far from happy.

The bride-to-be has complained that the dress is a little too white and she gets the feeling her stepmum is doing this to try to steal the limelight.

In a Reddit post, the bride-to-be, who remained anonymous, shared pictures of the dress along with the caption: "Stepmum of the bride wants to wear this."

Beneath the pictures, the woman explained her dislike for the dress choice: "As the bride, I think it's a little too white. And I get the feeling she's doing it on purpose to try and upstage everyone. Am I overreacting?"

In response, many were livid with the stepmum and felt this was not the appropriate dress to wear at the wedding and it looks like she is trying to bring all the attention away from the bride.

One person wrote: "Beautiful dress, absolutely inappropriate for someone who is not the main character."

While another stated: "Yeah this is a 'look at me, not the bride!' dress. Love it, but not for the wedding."

A third penned: "I think if it could be feasibly worn as a wedding dress by the bride, it's not appropriate for anyone else to wear. And I'd say this falls very firmly into that category."

Not everyone agreed with the bride to be as somebody noted: "Several women wore dresses like to my own wedding, and I barely noticed., so this whole post baffles me."
