Cleveland Browns defensive tackle Perrion Winfrey is facing a misdemeanour assault charge in Harris County, Texas, after being arrested earlier this week.
According to court documents, Winfrey was arrested on Monday evening after “unlawfully, intentionally and knowingly cause bodily injury to" a woman who he had a “dating relationship” with. The document goes on to say that the Browns star “pulled” the woman’s hand, causing injury.
Winfrey posted a $1,000 (£800) bond on Tuesday and his next court day is next Tuesday, according to Harris County District Court records. NFL franchise the Browns are aware of Winfrey’s situation, and a spokesperson is quoted by Cleveland.com as saying the team is “aware of the situation and gathering more information.”
The 22-year-old is new to the league, only being drafted last April. Winfrey was taken in the fourth round of the NFL Draft, the 108th overall pick.
In his short time with the Browns, it’s been far from plain sailing for Winfrey, who was given a team-issued suspension for disciplinary issues following Week Two’s loss to the New York Jets.

Winfrey appeared in 13 games for the Browns but missed four. The defensive tackle missed time aside from suspension due to a head injury sustained in a scooter accident. Winfrey finished with 22 combined tackles, 0.5 sacks, one tackle for loss and two quarterback hits.

The Browns didn’t have a first-round pick last year and won’t have one in 2024 either due to the deal.
Browns fans can’t expect any action in the second-round either. For the second year running, the Browns won’t have a pick in the second phase of the draft. In 2022 they traded down on the second night of the draft. This year they gave that pick to the Jets in the Elijah Moore deal.
