American fast food chain Five Guys is a staple in many cities across the UK.

Many Brits will flock to the American-born eatery to pick up a succulent burger or salty fries for lunch or dinner.

But there's no getting around the price on the receipt, as Five Guys meals are known to be one of the pricier options on the market.

In stores across the UK, customers can expect that a normal cheeseburger will be around £7.95, while a bacon cheeseburger is £1 extra. A small portion of fries will set you back nearly £3.

The chain was first founded in 1986, in Arlington County, Virginia, US, and since then customers have shared their sky high bills for what could be a fairly simple order.

However, a top boss at the company recently revealed why the food is so expensive - and the reasoning behind it might surprise you.

Iain Ross-Mackenzie, Director Of Operations-APAC at Five Guys International, has spoken out on why we're forking out so much for the brand's burger and fries.

One of the reasons behind the higher prices is that punters can customise their orders. Plus, stores always use fresh ingredients for their meals.

"Customer choice is really important to us," Iain told The Rakyat Post.

"We want to put control back in the consumer's pocket. Nothing in store is frozen, we only ever use fresh ingredients.

"People come to Five Guys for a simple, great American burger. And that's what they will get here."

But away from the table, the store is keen to bring an authentic American experience to its customers which apparently bumps up the prices.

The menu includes a variety of burgers and hot dogs in keeping with the American theme.
