A British tourist has been electrocuted after losing his balance and grabbing a live wire in a tragic accident in India.

Ivan Brown, 71, died on Sunday while taking pictures in a tourist spot in the northern state of Himachal Pradesh, police said.

The former pub landlord grabbed a live wire when he lost his balance near a construction site, his family said.

He was visiting the area with a friend as part of a two-month trip they were taking around India.

Mr Brown's loved ones said they are "absolutely distraught and heartbroken" following the death of the man, who they described as " the heart and soul of our family".

The tourist and his friend had been in Dalhousie town in the Chamba district and had planned to leave to visit Dharamshala, the winter capital of Himachal Pradesh, on Monday.

Mr Brown bought The Murderers' pub in Norwich in 1984 and ran it for over 30 years.

According to the pub's website, Mr Brown was a landlord up until earlier this year. The pub is now owned by Phil and Sherie Cutter.

Following Mr Brown's death, the Foreign Office said in a statement: "We are supporting the family of a British man who has died in India and are in contact with the local authorities."
