The Americans always do things bigger. We had our own scandal with the man in charge – Partygate with its wine and cheese, fixed penalty notices and appearances in front of select committees.

But across the pond, they have to add a bit of razzmatazz.

Their own former leader is about to be involved in a high-profile legal battle involving porn star Stormy Daniels and hush money and could well be in handcuffs by Tuesday.

(Probably not – but we can dream).

It would be a fitting end to one of the most bizarre chapters in US political history.

In fact, 2016 – the election of President Trump – feels like it was a watershed moment.

His coming to office unleashed a wave of populism across the globe and the ripples have caused problems ever since.

For a long while, the world has felt like a strange and dangerous place. The Ukraine war is still raging, Paris is burning, there is sewage in the rivers and we’ve run out of tomatoes.

Maybe the prosecution of Donald Trump will mark the end of this period.

When his exploits are revealed, Mr Trump will be exposed for what he is – a TV personality who was dangerously under-qualified and ill-suited for high office.

Maybe it will make us all think again.

Politics should not be a personality contest. It should be about who has the best ideas, the political will, the gravitas for the job.

As we have seen with Mr Trump and Mr Johnson, once the joke has worn thin, there is no substance left.

There are local elections coming up and it is important to get out there and vote.

Then the impending general election.

All elections are important but this one feels critical. Vote wisely. Vote for the one you would trust with your neighbourhood, your town, the country.

Not the one you’d rather have a pint with.

Honour Jade

Ten years ago, 14-year-old Jade Lomas-Anderson was killed by four dangerous dogs.

Ever since, her parents have fought to have the law tightened.

They want tougher sentences and measures to make sure owners are more responsible.

In the decade that has passed, next to nothing has happened.

This is not good enough – particularly because fatal dog attacks are on the rise.

The Government owes it to families such as Jade’s to take action and ensure its citizens are properly protected.

Fruit mockjail

Prisoners at a Staffordshire jail have been making illegal hooch out of fruit handed out to improve their diets.

The whole thing is bananas. Inmates should be behind bars, not propping them up.
