A retail park was evacuated this morning after a chemical incident sparks an emergency service response.

Firefighters and paramedics scrambled to the scene at Oldbury retail park where two people had to be assessed by medics.

A B&M garden centre and a children's leisure centre were evacuated as part of the emergency response which triggered just before 9am at Swim! Oldbury, West Midlands.

The incident is believed to have been caused by the "incorrect mixing of two chemicals in the plant room", according to West Midlands Fire Service.

Fire crews were looking into which chemicals were involved in the incident and the plant room was ventilated, reports Birmingham Live.

"We are currently in attendance at a chemical incident at Birchley Island Retail Park in Oldbury," West Midlands Fire Service said in a tweet.

"We have crews from @WMFSOldbury @WMFSHadenCross and one of our specialist teams in attendance."

Incident response units were called to the scene from West Midlands Ambulance Service along with specialist units from West Midlands Fire Service.

A spokesperson for the service said: "There has been an incident in the plant room where there's been an incorrect mixing of two chemicals.

"The leak has been stopped, the room has been ventilates and they're just assessing what has been involved.

"The building was evacuated and the adjacent B&M for public safety.

"There were a couple of people that have been assessed by the ambulance service."
