A 21-year-old woman has allegedly been killed and burned in a drum by her boyfriend who is accused of being obsessed with witchcraft.

Laila Vitória Rocha Oliveira met her partner André Ávila several months ago.

The suspect uses the name Victor Samedi on social media and appears to frequently post images of the devil, skulls, swords, and items used for communicating with the dead.

Rocha Oliveira, who came from Parauapebas, Brazil, was allegedly murdered in the suspect’s home in Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul State, on 25 March.

Her family only found out about her death the following day.

The suspect’s neighbours called the police after hearing screams and loud noises on the night of the alleged murder.

After arriving at the home, the police reportedly found the victim’s charred body inside a burning drum, with multiple injuries on her body as well as a large stab wound in her abdomen.

Laila's mother told local media that she moved to Porto Alegre about two months ago and started dating a man who called himself a ‘wizard’.

The mother added that she warned her daughter to be careful and reflect on her relationship with the man.

The suspect’s lawyer Jean Maicon Kruse denied the accusations of witchcraft, stating: “The defendant does not practice the acts imputed to him in the way that has been printed by some press outlets.”

The defendant also “vehemently denies that the facts established in the investigation have religious motivations and/or that the young woman was kept in private prison”, the lawyer added.

The authorities are currently investigating the victim’s death as femicide, a gender-based crime that is distinguishable from homicide.

Despite the suspect’s apparent interest in black magic, the police said they have ruled out any links with the alleged murder and a religious ritual.

The investigation continues.
