Paul O'Grady touched many hearts of people and animals alike with one Good Morning Britain viewer getting in touch with Wednesday's show to share his own encounter with the presenter.

The iconic performer died "unexpectedly but peacefully" on Tuesday and tributes have been flooding in ever since Paul's husband Andre Portasio confirmed the tragic news.

On Good Morning Britain, hosts Susanna Reid and Martin Lewis read out messages of condolences from viewers.

The personal finance expert began: "I'd just like to read something from Mohammod, it's not just celebrities remembering him.

"'I met Paul when I was homeless. He walked up to me, in the middle of the high street and sat down next to me. Introduced himself then said, 'Come let's go get you a meal inside that tummy of yours'. He spent 3hrs with me then put me in a hotel for the night. May his soul rest in peace."

Good Morning Britain viewers praised Mohammod for sharing his story as one tweeted: "That is so sweet," while another wrote: "Amazing story. RIP Mr O’Grady."

"A true gent and destined for a higher plane of existence," a third said and another added: "What a lovely story."

In a statement, Paul's husband said: "It is with great sadness that I inform you that Paul has passed away unexpectedly but peacefully yesterday evening.

"He will be greatly missed by his loved ones, friends, family, animals and all those who enjoyed his humour, wit and compassion.

"I know that he would want me to thank you for all the love you have shown him over the years."

Paul had recently finished a stint on tour playing Miss Hannigan in the musical Annie and was set to present on Boom Radio on Easter Sunday.

His long-time radio producer Malcolm Prince said he had visited the star at his home on Tuesday afternoon, describing him as "laughing, smiling, and full of life".

He wrote on Twitter : "He was so proud of Annie, so happy to be back on Boom Radio, and he was looking forward to so many new projects.

"And now he's gone. I can't believe it. We have lost a unique talent - and I've lost a dear friend."
