Sergio Aguero has backed his former club Manchester City to pip Arsenal in the title race.

Arsenal hold an eight-point lead over City, although Pep Guardiola's champions have a game in hand and host Mikel Arteta's side on April 26.

Aguero, City's record goalscorer who won five Premier Leagues in 10 seasons with the Blues, reckons his old club's experience of seeing out title races can give them the edge.

“This is proving to be quite a title race,” said Aguero. “Arsenal are very consistent – I know Mikel Arteta and I respect his expertise. He knows how to make his team perform, and to better utilise the young, hungry players in his squad.

“We are keeping up the pace, though and are hot on their heels. But we also know, from tried and tested experience, that it isn't over until it's over. One thing is certain, City will fight until the end. It's in our DNA. I hope we can overtake them and win another title.”

Aguero, 34, said he would love to have formed a strike partnership with Erling Haaland, who has bagged a record 42 goals in his debut season for City.

“That would have been nice, wouldn't it?” said Aguero, who scored a record 260 goals for City. “I think we'd have been able to complement each other well.

“I've played with some pure strikers like Haaland during my career. For Independiente and Atletico Madrid, I played with Diego Forlan and Diego Costa.

“Or at City, with Edin Dzeko and Alvaro Negredo – they are great examples. The result was always very good. When one was in, the other was out.

“That allowed us to create more dangerous situations and we scored a lot of goals together. I’m certain that would have been the case with Haaland, who has had an amazing start to life at City.”
