The prosecutor investigating former President Donald Trump has received a letter containing a death threat and white powder, according to law enforcement sources.

The letter was mailed to Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg and read: "ALVIN: I AM GOING TO KILL YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!”

NBC News reports that the note contained a small amount of white powder, though it is unclear exactly what the substance was.

No evacuations or injuries were reported, according to officials, with law enforcement saying that Mr Bragg and his office have received "several hundred threats" in recent weeks, with some directly threatening serious harm to the lawyer.

Mr Bragg sent an email to his office acknowledging the challenges they have faced over the past week. "I know it hasn’t been easy,” he wrote in the email, with all of the “press attention and security around our office".

He went on to thank staff for their “strength and professionalism during this time".

“We will continue to apply the law evenly and fairly,” he wrote.

The New York District Attorney's office said the letter “was immediately contained and that the NYPD Emergency Service Unit and the NYC Department of Environmental Protection determined there was no dangerous substance".

Markings on the envelope suggest that the letter was sent from Orlando, Florida, earlier in the week.

The letter comes after Trump falsely announced that he was due to be arrested this past Tuesday and that his supporters should "protest".

On Friday, the former president warned on his social media website of "potential death and destruction" if the District Attorney indicts him.

The possible criminal charges relate to a hush money payment to adult film star Stormy Daniels ahead of the 2016 presidential election.

The case is centered around allegations that Trump falsified business records.

Michael Cohen, Trump's former lawyer, testified before the grand jury on Monday.

Trump maintains that he has committed no crime and has accused Mr Bragg of having a political motivation.

If indicted, Trump could be arrested and taken into custody where a mug shot and fingerprints will likely be taken.

He would then appear in court to hear charges and enter a plea.

Defendants at the pre-trial hearing stage are either jailed or released on bail while the hearings take place.
