What's going on at Liverpool?

That's the question on everyone's lips, as the Reds are well and truly rudderless. Jurgen Klopp is enduring what's considered to be the toughest period of his seven-year stay at Anfield - even more so than the injury-hit 2019-20 season. Liverpool have won just one of their seven games in 2023, that sole victory being one in a competition which they're now out of, the FA Cup.

With a season-defining run of fixtures coming up, particularly next Monday's Merseyside derby clash with Everton and a Champions League round-of-16 tie against Real Madrid, Klopp is under pressure to turn the Reds around fast. Pundits and former players are already questioning the German's future, just like a number of other influential people at the club.

Here's a round-up of the latest news from Anfield.

Gakpo admits to "difficult" start

Cody Gakpo has admitted that his start to life at Liverpool has been "difficult" but vowed to work hard and improve. The 23-year-old Dutch forward has made six appearances for the Reds but failed to register a goal or assist, looking rather lost in Jurgen Klopp's currently dysfunctional system.

"It's always different when you come into a team that was maybe first and winning every game, but it's now in a little bit of a difficult situation," Gakpo told WALK ON, Liverpool's eMagazine. "So for me it is to come in and show what I can. If we were in first I have to do that and now we are in another place I have to do that also. I just try to show my best side."

Keys slams Klopp and makes quit prediction

Jurgen Klopp has been slammed by ex-Sky Sports presenter Richards Keys, who reckons that the Liverpool manager could quit in the coming months. Referencing Klopp's decision to snub a journalist in a post-match press conference following Saturday's 3-0 drubbing away to Wolves, Keys wrote on his website: "There's only one winner when a coach falls out with the press - and it's not the coach.

"My guess is Klopp will walk. Not now - but if they're knocked out of the CL by Real Madrid I think he'll be gone before the start of next season. Liverpool are way off. A shadow of what they once were - and it’s no good blaming FSG. The downfall is Klopp's responsibility."

Ward linked with Ajax role

Dutch giants Ajax are reportedly eyeing a move for Liverpool sporting director Julian Ward. 41-year-old Ward, who succeeded the highly-rated Michael Edwards at Anfield last summer, is set to leave his post after only season in charge.

According to De Telegraaf, the ex-Irish League midfielder is one of the candidates currently being considered by the Eredivisie champions to become their new technical director. Ajax are still searching for someone to fill the vacant position after Marc Overmars left the club a year ago, when he was found to have sent inappropriate messages to female colleagues.
