Keir Starmer has published details of his own tax affairs showing an income of over £210,000 in the last financial year.

In his role as leader of the Labour Party and MP he earned £126,154 in 2021/22 alongside capital gains of £85,466, a summary document showed.

Labour said the capital gains - of which he paid £23,930 in tax on - came from the sale of a property he bought for his sister and her children to live in.

His total income for the year stood at £211,620 with a tax payment of £67,033.

Meanwhile Rishi Sunak's own tax details published around 24 hours earlier showed he pulled in over £1.6million in capital gains - of which he paid £325,826 in tax.

The Prime Minister's earnings largely came from a US-based investment fund held in a so-called "blind trust".

In 2020/21 when Mr Starmer succeeded Jeremy Corbyn as leader of the Labour Party he received no income from capital gains, the summary said.

But he did rake in over £21,000 in the financial year 2020/21 from legal work.

After becoming Labour leader Mr Starmer gave up his licence to practice law.

It is understood Mr Starmer's sale of a plot of land purchased in the 1990s will appear in his tax return for the current financial year.

The Sunday Mirror reported the seven-acre field he bought for his parents, who used it to look after neglected donkeys, sold for between £350,000-£400,000 in late 2022.
