Lewis Hamilton was the one who decided to end his long-time partnership with physio Angela Cullen, Toto Wolff has revealed.

It was announced on Friday that Hamilton will no longer be able to count on the in-person support of Cullen on race weekends. She had worked as his physiotherapist, personal assistant and trusted confidant for seven years, but the two have now split.

Both posted emotional messages on social media about the end of their partnership which painted a picture of a mutual decision. But Mercedes team principal Wolff has strongly hinted that it was Hamilton who decided that a change was needed.

"Angela has and will always be a mascot of the team – she's the only one who has a louder voice than a starting car," he joked when speaking with reporters in Jeddah. "But if this is what he decides, we will always absolutely support him. Whatever direction he wants to take.

"Angela was part of the gang for a long time. And I think in every team, whether that is his close circle, also in the wider group, this is not a static situation that you can freeze because we all developers. As people we develop as an organisation and if things don't work out anymore, then we need to be honest about it. And then bring change."

Hamilton broke the news with a social media post, in which he paid tribute to a woman who has been his rock within the F1 paddock. "For the last seven years, Angela Cullen has been by my side, pushing me to be the best version of myself," he wrote.

"I am a stronger athlete and a better person because of her. So today I hope you'll join me in wishing her the very best as she takes her next steps to pursue her dreams. Thank you for everything Ang, I can't wait to see what the future has in store for you."

And in her own message, Cullen said: "Exactly seven years ago on this day I was standing in the F1 paddock for the first time at the Australian GP. Today I'm excited to share I'm off on my next adventure. I am so grateful and blessed to have had this incredible journey in F1 and I know my story will continue.

"Thanks to the MB team, who have been my family for the past 7 years. And Lewis Hamilton you GOAT! It's been such an honour and pleasure to stand along side you I'm so proud of you and everything you have achieved. Thank you for supporting me, believing in me and showing me the limitless potential we all have within us.

"I am so excited to watch the next chapter for you. There's nothing you can't do. Don't stop believing... Life's journey is one big wave. Keep riding, dream big as dreams do come true. Forever by your side. STILL WE RISE."
