An evil uncle who brutally murdered his niece when she refused to marry her cousin and dumped her body on wastelands with a spike still embedded in her body has been jailed for life.

Mohammed Taroos Khan, 53, was found guilty of murder by a jury at Bradford Crown Court on Tuesday for the death of Somaiya Begum, 20.

During the trial, the court heard how Somaiya, a student, was subject to a Forced Marriage Protection Order at the time of her death as her father had threatened her with violence to force her to marry a cousin.

Her body was found wrapped in a rug and tied up 11 days after she vanished on June 25 last year.

This morning Mr Justice Garnham sentenced him to a life sentence, with a minimum term of 25 years before he is eligible for parole.

He was also sentenced to five years for perverting the course of justice, which will be served concurrently.

The judge said: "It is said you did not share the views of your brother Yaseen about the role of women or obligations for her to marry her cousin in Pakistan.

"All that matters is that the jury have found you guilty of the heinous crime of murder. The loss of this vibrant woman is felt acutely by her family.

"The sentence I must impose for murder is fixed by law and I am required to sentence you for life imprisonment," Yorkshire Live reported.

He said he does not consider the case is appropriate where a whole life term is appropriate but a minimum term "is what it says" and Khan must serve it before being released.

During the case, the court heard Khan had attended her address a number of times on June 25.

He was later seen on CCTV in the area of Fitzwilliam Street where her body was found taking something out of his car.

During the trial, the court heard Khan told police he was not responsible for killing Somaiya, and said "no comment" when asked "surely you could help find her?"

The court had earlier heard how Somaiya's father stopped her from going to college and university, watching TV, and wearing westernised clothes.

As Khan's barrister Zafar Ali KC closed the defence's case on Wednesday, he described Somaiya as "bright, hard-working and brave".

Mr Ali said: "Despite the terrible cruelty we've heard she suffered at the hands of her father, Yaseen Khan, she was brave enough to report him to the police, standing up not only for herself but also protecting her younger sister from the misery of a forced marriage.

"Despite the oppressive life she lived under the brutal tyranny of her father she managed to win a place at university and begin a new, happier life away from him, away from that oppression."
