Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney made an offer to sign Ben Foster this season before the Premier League goalkeeper announced his retirement.

Foster played in the Premier League for 15 seasons across his career, while also spending time in the Championship and in the lower league on loan. But after leaving Watford at the end of last season, Foster had originally planned to play again this year, but ultimately chose to retire, although received several offers.

When looking back on his career, Foster gives Wrexham credit for helping start his career - during a 2005 loan move to the club, where he impressed and joined Manchester United.

After discussing his loan move to Wrexham nearly 20 years ago, Foster said: "Wrexham were one of the clubs I got an offer from earlier in the season actually!"

"Its such a good football community, they really care about their club, and even when I was there they were going through a tough time, but it's nice to see that they have owners who really care - about the club and the community."

Speaking on why he didn't join Wrexham and choose to retire, he said: "It would have been cool, but I had just been playing in the Premier League with Watford and towards the end I didn't get the same buzz. I lost that buzz for it a little bit and that's why I didn't carry on going."

Foster also had a sizeable offer from Newcastle United to join as the starter with Nick Pope injured, which he says was the moment he realised he wanted to retire as he did not want to commit to football and be away from his family and other commitments.

Wrexham instead signed former Sheffield United, Blackpool, Bolton and Scunthorpe United keeper Mark Howard, who is currently their No.1 option in their high-flying season.

Owners McElhenney and Reynolds have spent large amounts to bring in a number of star players to the team, more than delivering on their commitment to the football club since becoming owners in 2021.

The Hollywood stars are seen at the Racecourse Ground throughout the season, while a documentary team follows them around as part of Disney+'s' Welcome to Wrexham. The team is currently four points clear at the top of the table.
