A lucky woman won a life changing $1million (£820,000) on a lottery scratchcard after a spooky voice urged her to buy the ticket.

Wendy Hester was at Fair Haven Mini Marty in North Carolina, US, doing her weekly shop when she decided to buy a scratchcard after hearing a strange voice inside her head.

The voice convinced her to purchase a $8 (£6) VIP Platinum instant scratchcard before heading home with her groceries.

She revealed: "Something just told me to buy it, so I did. It was just meant to be, I think."

Wendy waited until she got home to scratch off the lucky ticket and was left astonished after finding out she had won a life changing $1million (£820,000).

She said: "I just kept looking at it thinking, 'This can't be right'. But it was right.'"

Wendy quickly phoned her husband to tell him the huge news.

She said: "I called him and told him, 'I just won a million dollars.' This is a dream. We can finally get our home."

The husband and wife want to use the money to pay off a car loan as well as purchase a new home.

The money will transform their lives, she added: "This is a godsend. We really needed this."

Wendy went to collect her winnings at the North Carolina Education Lottery headquarters in the city of Raleigh.

She chose a one-time payment after being offered the annual prize of $41,324 (£33,000) over 20 years and a lump sum of $599,990 (£493,000).

Wendy then took home a total of $429,000 (£353,300) after state and federal taxes.

The huge win comes after a sales worker won $50,000 (£42,000) on a lottery ticket - despite nearly throwing it away.

The 22-year-old, named Mambo, from Maryland State, US, was about to chuck out his scratchcard after he thought he had already checked it.

He said: "We were going to throw the ticket away. We are lucky we didn't."

Mambo had purchased $30 (£25) of scratch-offs when he stopped at the convenience store in the city of La Plata, Charles County.

He said: "I had a few bucks in my pocket and I decided to play.”

Mambo and his wife had made two piles of scratched-off tickets - for winners and losers.

He noticed a high jackpot Gold X20 ticket on the loser pile which had already been scratched but decided to check it again.

And to his amazement, it was a winner, which he nearly discarded.

Thankfully, he checked it again and the winnings will help the couple find a new home.

He said: "We were both deciding if we should try to get a house in this tough market. We will get one now."
