Alejandro Garnacho has thanked Kyle Walker-Peters for the well wishes after the Manchester United star suffered a nasty-looking injury against Southampton on Sunday.

Garnacho, 18, was seen leaving Old Trafford in a protective boot and on crutches after being on the end of a strong challenge from Walker-Peters during the drab 0-0 draw.

Reports suggest that Garnacho's injury could now be worse than first feared and the teenager may be set for a lengthy spell on the sidelines. It is understood that Garnacho will almost certainly miss Argentina's upcoming international fixtures - a week after receiving his first call-up.

In the aftermath of the incident, Walker-Peters received vile racist abuse on his Instagram account - something Southampton have reported to the police and the relevant social media companies.

Walker-Peters has since spoken out for the first time following the abuse and admitted he is thankful for the 'messages of support' but believes society must do better to tackle the issue.

He said on Instagram: "Proud of a hard earned point in a tough game at Old Trafford. Especially since we feel we could have had a bit more. It was a big effort from everyone. Thank you to the travelling supporters especially who made the journey to help push us on.

"On a personal level, the racial abuse I received is something that no player or person should ever have to experience. We need to be better, and this is bigger than just football. More needs to be done to prevent this from happening time and time again. Thank you to everyone who has sent messages of support since, I appreciate each and every one of you.

"Finally, to @garnacho7 it would never be my intention to injure a fellow professional. I wish you a speedy recovery and hope to see you back in action as soon as possible."

In the comments section, Garnacho replied to Walker-Peters' post and agreed that the problems surrounding racial abuse is bigger than football. He said: "More than football. Thank you very much for the message brother, this is part of football."

Meanwhile, Garnacho's United teammate Raphael Varane also joined in to support Walker-Peters for what he has been going through over the past 48 hours. The Frenchman commented: "Bigger than football. Well said Kyle, you have my support."

Tottenham winger Heung-min Son added: "Strength to you Kyle well said." Meanwhile, Ryan Sessegnon, Harry Winks, Samuel Edozie, Eberechi Eze and Jannik Vestergaard were amongst the others to send supportive messages to the highly-rated right-back.
