Protests have broken out in India after the body parts of a missing 30-year-old woman were uncovered by police.

The protests, which were described as ‘massive’, were held in Jammu and Kashmir’s Budgam district, a week after the discovery was made.

The woman disappeared on March 7, with her family going on to file a report with the police.

Police detained accused man, Shabir Ahman, who was known to the woman. Police then questioned Ahman and recovered the chopped-up body parts from multiple locations based on what he told them.

The carpenter, 45, allegedly kidnapped the woman, then murdered her and chopped up her body, going on to dump the parts in multiple locations.

The killing has triggered huge protests in the area, with many people attending Ahman’s home to demand his hanging.

A number of women who were part of the protest argued that the accused should be handed over to them so that he meets the same fate as the woman.

Many have demanded that the murder is a "rarest of rare" case and Ahman should be given exemplary punishment.

Police sources reported that the woman was recently engaged, and that it is claimed Ahmad had objected to it.

According to the Hindustan Times, Ahmad had undertaken masonry work at the woman’s house and “allegedly killed the woman for rejecting a proposal to marry one of his relatives last year.

“While some of her relatives suspect she was sexually assaulted, police are yet to ascertain the same.”

Budgam senior superintendent of police (SSP) Tahir Gilani said the woman’s head was recovered from the accused’s house.

He said: “The main body was recovered from Sebdan Bridge. The limbs were recovered from a tank near his house.

“The probe is at an early stage. I cannot discuss the motive here. We have recovered the weapon of offense which is a knife. The post-mortem is done and viscera have been sent to the FSL. We are waiting for reports.”
