A young man has been arrested on suspicion of terrorism offences after a woman was stabbed outside a leisure centre.

The woman suffered serious injuries and remains in hospital.

The 29-year-old man had previously been detained on suspicion of attempted murder immediately after the incident.

He was re-arrested last night under the Terrorism Act, and today, a warrant of further detention has been obtained, allowing officers until Thursday 16 March to question him.

The woman was stabbed outside a leisure centre in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, at around 9.15pm on Thursday but police say it was an isolated incident.

Assistant Chief Constable Richard Ocone, of Gloucestershire Constabulary, said: "I would like to reassure those living locally or visiting the county that we believe this was an isolated incident and we are not aware of any wider threat to members of the public.

"We are working closely with our partners in Counter Terrorism Policing."

He added: "We appreciate that an incident of this nature may be concerning and we would encourage people to contact us via 101 with any additional information they may have about the incident."

Yesterday, the leisure centre confirmed a "police matter" was ongoing and the cite would remain closed for the day.

In a statement of Facebook, it said: "Leisure at Cheltenham is closed today due to a police matter. We will keep all of our members updated when we are able to reopen.

"We apologise for any inconvenience. Our phone line will not be available during this time."

Speaking yesterday, a spokesperson for Gloucestershire Police said officers were called at about 9.15pm last night with a report of an assault outside the property.
