Planning a wedding can be an eyewateringly expensive task, and brides and grooms may end up surprised at just how pricey wedding cakes can be. Indeed, the average price of a wedding cake is approximately £300 in the UK, according to Hitched, while more extravagant couples may well end up spending more than £1000.

Of course, many people simply won't be able to factor such costs into their budget, and will instead be looking around for creative, thrifty ways to display their cake in style.

With this in mind, a talented baker has shared their go-to wedding cake illusion hack, and it could well save some all-important pennies ahead of this big day.

Taking to TikTok, where she goes by the username @imakeweddingcakes, the clever baker demonstrated how she can put together a "dummy cake" for weddings, whereby just one part of a layer is actually real cake.

In a video captioned "can you tell?", the savvy chef showed how she can make a stunning-looking seven-tiered cake made mostly from styrofoam, with subtle markings showing where the happy couple should cut.

This hack could well be worth considering if you're after a showstopper for pics, all while keeping a cheaper cake behind the scenes to serve up to guests.

Many followers thought the idea was pretty sweet, and, commenting beneath a follow-up vid, agreed that illusion cakes could well help couples keep costs down.

One person wrote: "I did this for my wedding for the cake-cutting ceremony and photos. It was wheeled in the back for 'cutting' and sheet cake served."

Another remarked: "My mum and dad did this at their wedding in 1992. More people should do it if they want to reduce costs."

Others however weren't quite as sure, with a third person fearing they'd simply "forget where the real piece is and eat frosted styrofoam to save face."
