A Greggs lover has earned himself a cash prize after he managed to wolf down 14 treats from the popular bakery chain in just three minutes - including six pasties, four sausage rolls, and four doughnuts.

Max Stanford, 35, scoffed a staggering 5,000 calories as part of an online contest held by the British Eating League (BEL), which challenged him to eat four steak bakes, two chicken bakes, four sausage rolls, two pink jammie doughnuts, and two caramel custard doughnuts.

The charity worker demolished the bakery snacks in just three minutes and nine seconds, beating all his competitors by a huge margin and bagging himself a cash prize of £100.

Max, from Brixton, London, said: "It was a fun contest - everyone loves Greggs.

"They were all pretty easy to eat fast and the change from pastry to sugary doughnuts was so nice. I honestly thought it was going to be a lot harder and take longer to eat, even I was surprised I ate all 14 items in just over three minutes.

"I was really happy to win, that's four out of four wins for me and definitely one of the tastiest so far.

"I liked the doughnuts the best. It was helpful that they were last as I was feeling all the pastry after having had 10 of them before that. I'll definitely be staying off the steak bakes for a while."

Max often tries out eating challenges and is also known online as Max vs Food, with the Greggs win securing the bloke his fourth consecutive eating competition title this year.

And he beat his competition by a mile, as second place went to Wayne Byrne from Wayne Eats World, who completed it in more than double Max's time - seven minutes and 28 seconds.

Wayne was closely followed by John Dawes of Food and the Beast, who came in third with a time of seven minutes and 36 seconds.

Founder of British Eating League Craig Harker said he was inspired to host a Greggs-themed contest as the chain is accessible to everyone across the country who might fancy a go themselves.

Craig said: "Everyone's got a Greggs within five minutes of their house, it's a British institution.

"Everyone thinks they can do a lot of it, but Max managed 5,000 calories in three minutes. It puts him up there with some of the world's best eaters. To manage that within a short time is a massive achievement, it's because of the dedication he puts into the sport.

"It's an absolute killer, if I'd have had a go I would have had a bottle of Gaviscon on hand."
