People are discovering how to properly clean wooden spoons with 'gross' results

Many people have no idea that their wooden spoons need deep cleaning, bunging them in the dishwasher and thinking no more of it, much like we do with knives, forks and spoons. But in reality, thanks to the porous material, food and grime can seep in, causing the utensil to become unhygienic.

Thankfully, one cleaning guru has shared a way to ensure that your wooden spoons are good as new - but prepared to be grossed out.

Lulaboo Jenkins, who posts on TikTok as @lulabookjenkins, responded a video from @kimmyskreations, which shows her putting her wooden spoons into a pot of boiling water.

She can be heard saying "ewww" as grime starts to bubble up to the surface.

Lulaboo was so shocked by the result, and she had to try it herself to see whether it actually worked, admitting that she'd never thought about cleaning them by boiling them.

She captioned the video: "Holy c*** I should have done this sooner! Lord help me this was gross."

"I've had these for like, years", she shared. "And now I'm very very scared."

She held some of her oldest spoons up to the camera, saying she was "scared for what comes out."

After she pulled the spoons out of the boiling water, she was horrified to not even be able to see the bottom of the pan.

In the comments, people were equally grossed out by the build-up of grime, but some were making jokes about it.

"Now the flavours are gone", one joked.

"That's why your food tastes so good. Now you've boiled out all the flavorings", another agreed, following their comment with a crying laughter face.

Someone else said: "I hope you didn't let those years of seasonings go to waste! Cook some ramen in it!"

A cleaning guru left a comment, writing: "I boil mine once a year with vinegar, then oil them down with mineral oil, mine have never splintered or warped."

Do you wash your wooden spoons like this? Let us know in the comments.
