Wout Weghorst enraged Manchester United fans by touching the iconic 'This Is Anfield' sign before Sunday's 7-0 mauling.

Footage emerged of on-loan United striker Weghorst touching the famous sign in the Liverpool tunnel as the teams walked out before kick-off. It is customary for Liverpool players to touch the sign as a mark of respect and superstition before heading out to play, but not for United players to follow suit.

Liverpool trio Virgil van Dijk, Cody Gakpo and Trent Alexander-Arnold all touched the famous sign as they walked under it, but found themselves in the odd position of being joined by an opponent from their fiercest rivals.

Once footage of Dutch international Weghorst touching the sign emerged on social media, United supporters vented their fury with the 30-year-old – a boyhood Liverpool fan - who is on loan from Burnley until the end of the season.

Weghorst has admitted to being a Liverpool supporter growing up, but his decision to pay homage to the Anfield sign left some United fans claiming his contract should be terminated with immediate effect.

One furious supporter wrote: “I don't care about his Carabao Cup pics anymore. He has to leave the club at the end of his 6 months. THIS VIDEO is enough to let him go. How the hell can you touch the Anfield sign as a MAN UNITED player?”

Another angry fan tok to Twitter to write: 'Its was 12 v 10 from the start.'

While another added: “Disgusting - was actually starting to like the bloke.”

Weghorst joined United on a six-month loan in January and is set to return to Burnley in the summer, after his loan at Besiktas was cancelled to allow him to move to Old Trafford until the end of the season.

Back in 2020, Weghorst said: “I always found Liverpool very special. I still get goosebumps from 'You'll Never Walk Alone'. There are other great English clubs too, and I always liked Milan because so many Dutch played there.”
