Constance Marten's baby who was tragically found dead under a pile of nappies was a little girl called Victoria, details read in court have revealed.

Marten appeared alongside partner and co-accused Mark Gordon at Crawley Magistrates' Court on Friday with both facing charges of manslaughter and concealing a birth.

The infant's remains were discovered in a bag in a shed on an allotment in Brighton on Wednesday following a major two-day search operation, the brief hearing was told.

Marten, 35, and Gordon, 48, spoke only to confirm their names, dates of birth and that they were of no fixed abode during a short hearing.

The pair, who are both also charged with perverting the course of justice, smiled and blew kisses at each other in front of a packed courtroom.

An indictment read out in the short hearing said both were charged with the negligent manslaughter of "baby Victoria".

Marten, who is from an aristocratic family, was charged alongside Gordon on Thursday after they were arrested in Brighton earlier this week.

Marten and Gordon were remanded into custody and are due to appear at the Old Bailey on March 31.

Chairwoman of the bench of magistrates Carol Lintott said: “You are both here today… on charges of manslaughter, concealment of the birth of a child and perverting the course of justice.

“We are sending the case to the crown court sitting at the Old Bailey.

“We are remanding you in custody until that time.”

The case has also been referred to the Independent Office of Police Conduct.
