We're taught to wash all our fruit and vegetables before we eat them to make sure they are clean and don't have any harmful bacteria on them.

Most of us just run them under them under the tap or rinse them through with a colander, but it turns out there is a more specific technique required when it comes to washing broccoli.

TikTok user Sidney Raz took to the social media platform, which he regularly uses to share life hacks, after discovering he's been doing it wrong his entire adult life - and he's not alone.

In the video, he shared: "Here's something I didn't know until I was in my 30s. Broccoli should be rinsed from the bottom."

The video has now been seen by more than 1.3million people, and Sidney can first be seen turning the tap on over a bunch of broccoli, and the water can be seen bouncing off the top and running down the sides.

Then, Sidney turns the broccoli upside down and puts it back into the water stream, and it can then be seen travelling through the green vegetable instead of bouncing off the top.

This makes it easier for the water to go inside all the crevices of the broccoli to make sure there's nothing hiding in between all the branches.

People in the comment section were amazed by the simple, but effective change-up to the broccoli-washing routine.

One person said: "I actually didn’t know this hahah I always cut it up and soak."

Another commented: "I actually didn’t know this hahah I always cut it up and soak."

"Well I've just found out and I'm in my 40s ffs," commented another.

"You're really changing my broccoli game [with] these discoveries," added a fourth.

A fifth commented: "How just how have we all been living so dang in the dark!??? I’m amazed every time another thing we didn't know."

However, others shared that they didn't even know they needed to rinse broccoli.

One person shared: "Never even knew it's supposed to be rinsed," while another asked: "Do we need to rinse broccoli?"

A second added: "Brocolli should be rinsed???? Normally just bung it in boiling water. Do I rinse it THEN boil it?"
