Thousands of teachers are walking out on Wednesday in what is set to be the biggest day of strikes in a decade.

Members of the National Education Union (NEU) will join around half a million public sector workers - including civil servants, train drivers, university lecturers, bus drivers and security - in staging industrial action.

The NEU wants a pay rise of 12 per cent, but the government is offering just five per cent.

The situation is so dire the National Association of Head Teachers (NAHT) has warned that many school leaders are now leaving their jobs altogether.

An analysis of Department for Education data found a staggering 25 per cent of head teachers resigned from their post within five years of taking on the role.

And almost 64 per cent of those decided to leave the state schools system altogether.

Paul Whiteman, general secretary of the NAHT, said the figures clearly showed 'the very real consequences of the government’s driving down' of school pay over the past decade.
