Klopp makes Liverpool's transfer stance clear after getting "worse" claim

Jurgen Klopp has maintained that no new faces will be arriving at Liverpool this month - despite claims from Andy Robertson that the Reds are getting "worse".

There are just days left of the transfer window but the Reds now won't be investing in their squad until the summer. Cody Gakpo is their only January arrival but critics have identified other problem areas that need addressing if the Merseysiders are to enjoy a promising end to the season.

Klopp though has underlined his confidence in the squad despite their latest loss at Brighton dumping them out of the FA Cup. It means Liverpool are now out of both domestic cup competitions whilst they face a major battle to make the top four, currently languishing in ninth.

The German said when quizzed on their recruitment over the coming days: “Nothing will happen in this transfer window, not at all. It's all good with this squad”

Liverpool have been particularly measured in the transfer window throughout Klopp's tenure. But whilst they were once the gold standard for transfer activity, things have declined in recent years. A lack of investment in their midfield has begun to catch up with them as their leading lights continue to age.

Andy Robertson, a man who has been a mainstay of their success under Klopp, has issued a damning verdict. The Reds endured a difficult second half of 2022 and had ambitions to make amends in the New Year, but the Scot confessed things look to have got worse.

If Liverpool are to turn the corner then they will have to do so with their current crop of stars - many of whom are not hitting the heights they have previously.

Robertson said: “We need to start winning games. It’s easy to say but harder to fix and it’s proven that way. This season has been nowhere near good enough, at the turn of the year we wanted a new start. But it’s not got off to that…it’s probably been worse. In the league we’ve not been good enough, we lost in the League Cup to Man City by one goal and now we’re out of both cups.

"It’s really disappointing. You can’t put your finger on one thing because it’s more than that and it’s about putting a performance together where all these things click. You can tell we aren’t as confident in front of goal and you can tell that defensively we are too open. We need to get the confidence back, but it’s easier said than done.

"The only way we pick up results is you have to score goals and you have to be able to keep clean sheets and we’re not managing that. We’re not managing to do that and we need to do it quick. But we keep saying that and that doesn’t help the fans. I feel sorry for them, we aren’t putting a show on them at the moment.”
