Sometimes, couples will put on silly little jokey bets that don't really mean anything in the real world. They may place a personal bet about a friend saying their catchphrase within the first half an hour of meeting up with them, or they may joke that said friend will turn up late, placing bets as to what their elaborate excuse will be.
One woman took to Reddit's 'Am I the a**hole' forum to explain the 'zero-stakes' bet she had with her husband about baby names - one in particular. She explained that they were 'brainstorming baby names' when he suggested a jokey name - and she then decided to bet someone had actually been named that before.
She refused to back down - insisting that she was right (Stock Image) (Getty Images/iStockphoto)She wrote: "My husband and I were brainstorming baby names this morning. He jokingly suggested that we name the baby 'hors d'ouevres' but insist that everyone pronounce it 'horse divorce'.
"I said I bet someone out there has named their child some iteration of 'Hors d'ouevres', but probably spelled differently. He said he would take that bet.
"I did a quick Google search, and couldn't find any evidence that anyone has ever had this name. I refused to concede, saying that just because I can't find them doesn't mean they don't exist.
'I don't want children staying up late at weekends - I really need adult time'
"He says I bet in bad faith and have to admit that I was wrong. I admitted that it was a bad-faith bet since there was never any way to prove him right in my eyes, but I refuse to admit that he was right. Am I the a**hole? For the record, this is a zero-stakes bet."
People were baffled by the argument and wondered why she didn't just admit that she was wrong and laugh about it with her husband.
One wrote: "What a dumb argument. So dumb I would feel embarrassed recounting it even anonymously online. I don't know why you'd suggest someone had used that name in the first place.
"In the absence of any evidence you were right, then you were wrong. So in this pointless discussion, you were wrong and should have conceded."
Another said: "You're the a**hole. You can't possibly be proven right without any evidence. And since you didn't find any, then your husband is right. Check your ego and admit you were wrong."
"If it's a zero-stakes bet, why don't you just concede and move on? You lose nothing", someone else wondered.
Another Redditor joked: "You're in luck! I named my twins "Horse" and "Divorce" so you win this one!"
