A protester has smased up a police car in New York during a protest following the release of footage of Tyre Nichols being beaten to death by officers.

Massive protests took place across the US on Friday night after police released the footage.

In Los Angeles a protester was seen shooting a firework at a police car during a demonstration.

In Memphis, where Tyre Nichols was killed by five police officers, protesters blocked a bridge on Interstate 55 chanting: "Say his name! Tyre Nichols!".

Mr Nichols, who was dad to a four-year-old boy, was on his way home from taking pictures of the sunset at a local park when he was pulled over by the police officers.

Following the savage attack he was left propped up against a car for 20 minutes without being given any first aid and died three days later on January 10.

In the shocking footage the 29-year-old can be heard repeatedly calling for his mum as the officers repeatedly punch, kick and hit him with a baton.

Afterwards he was left for 20 minutes propped up against a car as the officers milled around talking about the incident.

Court records showed that all five officers — Tadarrius Bean, Demetrius Haley, Desmond Mills Jr., Emmitt Martin III and Justin Smith — have been taken into custody.

The officers involved have all been fired and each face charges of second-degree murder, aggravated assault, aggravated kidnapping, official misconduct and official oppression.

A video taken at the New York protest shows a protester walking over the roof of the car as officers sit inside not acting.

Then the man on the car starts kicking the windscreen making the officers get out the car and move to arrest him.

As officers pull him from the bonnet of the car and others come to help with the arrest, onlookers, many of them filiming crowd round.

President Joe Biden urged for calm ahead of the video’s release and spoke of being "deeply pained" by the footage in a White House statement.

"It is yet another painful reminder of the profound fear and trauma, the pain, and the exhaustion that Black and Brown Americans experience every single day,” he said.

Further protests are expected across the US today.

Memphis Police Chief Cerelyn Davis said the video showed acts that "defied humanity".

As officers pull Mr Nichols out of his car and shout at him to get on the ground, the man can be heard saying: "I didn't do anything!"

As he is pushed into the ground one officer shouts: "Put your hands behind your back before I break your [expletive]."

Mr Nichols says to the officers "You guys are really doing a lot right now” and "I'm just trying to go home."

A separate video, captured by a nearby CCTV, shows the officers holding Mr Nichols down while others take turns kicking, punching and striking him with a baton.
