A 16-year-old schoolgirl is fighting for her life after a town centre stabbing as a 15-year-old has been arrested.
A large police cordon has been set up in Priestpopple, Hexham, Northumberland, after the incident.
Police officers and ambulance crews are working at the scene after a boy and girl – aged 15 and 16 - were injured with a blade just after 5pm.
The area remains completely closed off to the public and people are urged to avoid the area.
A 15-year-old boy has been arrested on suspicion of assault. He remains in police custody at this time.

A large police cordon is in place on Priestpopple in Hexham (Newcastle Chronicle)A statement from Northumbria Police said: "Emergency services attended the scene where the boy and girl – aged 15 and 16 – had suffered injuries consistent with having been caused by a bladed article.
"They were both taken to hospital with serious injuries, with the girl’s injuries described as life-threatening. Their next of kin are being informed.
"An investigation was immediately launched, and a 15-year-old boy has been arrested on suspicion of assault. He remains in police custody at this time.
"This is clearly a serious incident and a full investigation is under way.

"We are determined to find out what has happened and bring anyone involved to justice. There is a high police presence in the area and a cordon in place which will remain this way into the weekend."
