No prosecutions will be brought over the "tragic" death of a woman mauled by eight dogs.

The unnamed 28-year-old was attacked and killed when she was caring for a number of dogs in Gravelly Hill, Caterham on January 12.

Eight dogs were seized by police at the scene and continue to remain in police custody for forensic investigation.

None of the dogs were banned breeds and no prosecutions have been brought forward by Surrey Police, who have now closed their investigation.

The Surrey coroner will open an inquest into the death and a post-mortem was carried out on the body last week.

Senior investigating officer, Detective Inspector Josephine Horner, said: "This is a tragic incident in which a young woman lost her life.

"I know it has caused real concern locally and I thank the community for bearing with us whilst we conducted our inquiries.

"The criminal investigation has now concluded and the information we have gathered will be passed to the Surrey coroner to assist in the coronial process.

"The dogs continue to be cared for at private kennels to ensure their welfare and their owners are being kept informed.

"We appreciate this is a difficult and uncertain process for them as the forensic work continues."

In the wake of the attack, a couple said they believe they spotted the woman a few days before the attack.

She reportedly asked the couple - who described her as "agitated" and "distressed" - if they had seen an eight-week-old puppy she was caring for.

The attack a few days later reportedly occurred when one dog bit a fellow dog walker, before going after the eventual victim.

Armed officers and the National Police Air Service (NPAS) were dispatched by the police after reports of the incident were made around 2.45pm.

A witness said seven of the dogs set upon her "like a pack of wolves."

The dogs seized reportedly included a cockapoo, collie, and two dachshunds.

Another dog is believed to be an 11-stone Leonburger named Shiva that appeared on a BBC show about difficult dogs.
