We've all heard of the quirky rules that brides and grooms implement on their wedding day. While the most obvious one is that guests should never wear white to outshine the woman on her special day, one bride-to-be has sparked a huge debate online with her controversial requirement.

Taking to a wedding forum on Reddit, a woman currently planning her wedding, detailed her plan to charge people $60 (£50) to RSVP to their invitations. Seeking advice for whether the fee is a good idea, people have complained that the idea is 'tacky' - while others think it's rather clever.

The woman explained: "Planning on making everyone I invite and RSVP pay a refundable $60 fee (if you actually come) to try to offset the cost in case they don't show up.

"The only people who don't need to pay are the bridesmaid and groomsman. Everyone else needs to though regardless. Family is understanding of it.

"Cause we can invite 100 max and we did our final list and came up to 140 already," she added.

She asked Reddit users: "Thoughts? Is this a good or bad idea? Anyone done this before and if so how did it turn out?"

In response to her post, another woman shared the bride-to-be's original post and claimed that the idea was 'so tacky'.

She said: "It's so tacky to charge a deposit to attend a wedding. Don't throw a wedding you can't afford lol.

"Even if she does return the money it seems like so much of a hassle that if I was invited I wouldn't bother," they added.

Taking to the comment section, a second Reddit user agreed: "It's a tacky way to achieve it but I do kind of understand where she's coming from."

Meanwhile, someone else said: "I barely want to go for free. Believe me, I would be happy to skip any wedding if there's a charge to attend. It's sad really. And cringe."

On the other hand, a different user wrote: "If she goes through with it, it'll certainly help them get the guest count down."
