Hollywood owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney have applied for Wrexham to play in the Welsh women's top flight from next season.

Should Wrexham prove successful in gaining a league licence they will be competing with Welsh giants Cardiff and Swansea in the Adran Premier for the 2023-24 campaign. Both Reynolds and McElhenney publicly stated that investing in the women's programme would be a priority when they bought the club back in 2021.

Wrexham currently play in the second tier Genaro Adran North and are top of the table with six wins from six games. They finished second last season, losing only three games all campaign. Since taking over in 2021, Reynolds and McElhenney have invested to help the men's side compete for promotion to the EFL and will now look to transform the women's side in a similar way.

Promotion in the Welsh women's pyramid can only be confirmed when a licence to play in the top flight is granted. The Wrexham ownership decided against applying last season as they finished runner's up to Adran North winners Llandudno.

Their men's side narrowly missed out on promotion to League Two last season, when they finished second in the table and lost out in the play-offs to Grimsby. The Hollywood duo have often praised the women's side on social media, with McElhenney recently taking to Twitter to praise thei r 6-0 victory over CPDM Y Felinheli, shining the light on Amber Lightfoot specifically after she scored four goals.

There are currently eight teams in the Welsh women's top flight, while as well as Wrexham, Briton Ferry and Cascade have also applied. All applications are expected to be assessed from March. Although Wrexham Ladies were initially founder members of the Women's Welsh Premier League in 2009, they disbanded before reforming in 2018 as Wrexham AFC Women.
